KT IPTV + GYRO

Project Overview

As a UX designer at Infraware, Inc., I conducted product planning project for KT. My UX team collaborated with prestigious institutions and companies, including Seoul National University's Multimedia Lab, HCI Lab at KAIST(Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology), a British design company called Tangerine, and Infraware's development team.

The goal was to devise a way to show a variety of IPTV contents more efficiently, yet visually fruitfully. By creating a concept of "virtual channels," which groups programs alike, users can easily switch channels and access numerous programs with few motions.

In addition, by adopting a concept from bookstores, we introduced a UI to show programs under "What's Hot" or "Steady" in the virtual channel section. Users can control and switch channels with a gyro remote control by motioning in four directions: up, down, right, and left.

REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL
​​· Both screen and remote control demo development should be done. Proposals that require state-of-the-art technology that is impossible to develop are excluded from consideration.
· Beyond upgrading the usability of the existing Mega TV, a new concept of UI proposal should be made to meet the user experience from various angles.
· The popularity and versatility of TV should be considered.

What's the Solutions?

Design Directions

Be able to arrive at content quickly and easily

Design to avoid step-by-step tasks before watching

Users familiar with the concept of existing TVs would think, "Once I turn on the TV, I'm watching."
Thus, IPTV should allow immediate access to the “watching'” stage, which is its main purpose.
The steps of all functions, including search, should be minimized to reach the state of "watching TV."

Be able to surf channels via Virtual Channels

Group contents into categories and display them as virtual channels

Numerous VOD contents are categorized by virtual channels, allowing users to quickly cross channels by operating their remote controls.
* Categories can be by movie genres, the origin of country, types of shows, etc. (E.g. Romance, Comic, Horror, Drama, Music shows, etc.)

Adopt and link Thumbnail Viewable Channel UI with Gyro Motion UI

Use gyro motion to operate thumbnail screen of virtual channel

Unlike conventional TV UI, groups of virtual channels are shown at the bottom of the screen.
When crossing a channel or moving across contents, the gyro remote control enables prompt operation.

Show customized content thumbnails

Show contents tailored to user's interest to increase content consumption

Thumbnails of contents that are similar to the ones the user has previously watched or searched should be listed and displayed.

Adopt "Bookstore Shelf Display" UI

Introduce and expose old VODs to the main screen in various ways

By utilizing the bookstore concept, old VODs can be introduced in many ways and be exposed to the main screen.
E.g. Bestsellers, Steady sellers, Released this month, etc.

Be informative than a TV

Provide daily information (weather, news, schedule)

IPTV not only provides TV content but also many kinds of daily information that the users can conveniently view.
